Carpentry:
It is anticipated that students attending
a day-release course, whilst being employed, would achieve
Level 2 in approximately two years and Level 3 by the end
of the third year.
The content of the course aims to provide
the trainee with the skill and knowledge to obtain all the
relevant NVQ assessments. There are no formal examinations
as each Unit is assessed against an industrial criteria.
Each NVQ is made up of Units all of which have to be passed
to qualify for a NVQ Certificate.
Course Content: NVQ Level 2
In both Site Work and Bench Joinery
there are common Units which include the use and maintenance
of Hand Tools, understanding architects documents and drawings,
measurements,calculation and estimating. Timber technology,
safety legislation and building regulations. Also, working
with Portable Power Tools and a Circular Rip Saw, and erecting
and dismantling access platforms (scaffolding).
In
addition:
- Site Work would include fixing frames, boxing in, fitting
floor joists, fixing stairs and roofing.
- Bench Joiners would be taught to provide dimensional
positioning from straight frames and assemble components
to form products.

NVQ Level 3:
- Provide dimensional positioning for
setting out produces (basic timber components)
- Assemble components to form products (basic
timber)
- Install structural fabric components (complex
timber)
- Produce components from procured materials
(fixed machines)
- Contribute to the planning, organisation, monitoring,
control and evaluation of operational activities.
- Maintain working conditions and operational activities
to meet quality standards.

Costs: All College
Fees, NVQ Registration and any allied costs are met by GBCT
from
Government funding under the Jobskills/Modern Apprenticeship
Schemes.
Progress: GBCT Training
Adviser will carry out at least two Progress Visits at College
and three on site, annually. A written report will be given
to the trainee with a copy to the employer.
